Free POP3 Comes to Windows Live Hotmail
It’s official…ish! You can now access your Windows Live Hotmail emails through POP3, for free (previously this was only for Hotmail Plus users). This means you’re not stuck with Microsoft Outlook combined with the Live Connector, or stuck using Windows Live Mail. Microsoft is slowly rolling this out to all users, so if it’s not working for you, just hold tight.
To start you off; here’s details on how to set it up on your iPhone or iPod touch. If you’d just like the settings, they’re after the jump at the bottom of this post.
Hotmail on the iPhone
Tap ‘Settings’.
Tap ‘Mail, Contacts, Calendars’
Tap ‘Add Account’, followed by ‘Other’
Fill out your name, hotmail email address, hotmail password, and a description (I just called mine Hotmail)
Tap ‘Save’ in the top right corner, and wait a couple of seconds.
After it’s loaded, tap the ‘POP’ tab.
Now, under ‘Incoming Mail Server’ set the host name to pop3.live.com, your username is your *full* hotmail email address (eg, yournamehere@live.com) and password is your hotmail password.
Outgoing Mail Server details are the same, except the host name is smtp.live.com.
Enjoy!
If you don’t use an iPhone, here are the POP3 server details, just put these into your mail client:
Incoming Mail Server
Incoming Mail Server: pop3.live.com
User Name : yournamehere@hotmail.com
Password : yourpassword
Outgoing Mail Server
Outgoing Mail Server : smtp.live.com
(If your client asks you, check that SSL is ON and authorisation is set to password)
